ElCap Report 10/09/08

By Tom Evans

Yo... A chilly day here with some light winds. The rock was fairly empty and the Bridge was fairly full. They are predicting possible rain soon but some sites say not.. typical! Today’s Report is brought to you by the Geologist Greg Stock who I met today for the first time. Nice guy! We are going to look at and photograph the rock fall origin area tomorrow if of course I can remember the appointment! Thanks for all you do for so many people and for your courage in being lowered down from mid-height on the Cap... many of us would have had a heart attack if we were in your place! Today's ElCap Report in your face right now......

Yo... Whoa what a busy day here in the Valley. Lots of things going on with all the EC stuff and the rock fall at Curry Village. The weather was great, the climbing was great, the human interest was great too... more below about all that stuff. Today's report is brought to you by Assistant Supt. Shackelton who showed up in the afternoon to check on the retrieval of one Dr. Rock (Greg Stock) from Mescalito. So flick that cig away, down the last of the cool one you have in your hand, lock the doors and bar the windows because it is quite a trip you are goin on with me to the steep sides of the greatest climbing rock in the USA. Today's Report....

Yo… Beautiful fall day here in the Valley. The two most popular climbs, the Nose and the Salathe are starting to get loaded up. There are several slow parties strung out on the Nose and the Salathe has a pile of climbers too, so if you are interested in the Cap then a word to the wise is to look around a little for another route besides the “big two”. Today’s report is brought to you by the guy who owns the beater white pickup truck that has been parked in “my spot” for the past several days… Thanks for nothing dude… no shots for you! Ha Ha… anyway here it is just for you … today’s ECR…

Yo.. Really super nice today here at the bridge and in the valley. As a result the Big Stone was crawling with climbers. I am having some computer problems at the moment so I am not going to try to post pics with this report yet but will insert them at a later date. Today’s report is brought to you by Katie Brown and Alex Honnold who were seen cruising up to the start of the White Circle early in the afternoon. Thanks for the red shirt Alex!!! Today’s report follows right here….

Yo… The storm has vanished as quickly at it came in and today was cool and sunny. The wall rats scurried up on the cliff with most of the action on the Nose. The wind was blowing pretty hard on all the exposed parts of the great cliff and most climbers were in jackets huddled at the belays. The air was clear and the photography excellent. The leaves are starting to turn on the North Side Drive and the air has the crispness of Fall now. The forecast is good way into the future so if you have any plans you had better put them into practice as the time has arrived to fish or cut bait. Today’s report is brought to you by Hans and Yuji who came by this afternoon on their way to do a tune up run up the Nose around 2pm. Imagine doing an afternoon ascent of the great climb! I did a many afternoons, and mornings ascent of the route myself!! So ditch the bags, trim the rack, start short fixing, and chalk up fast because we are going up on the Cap right now on Today’s ElCap Report… Zodiac: The team of two that had fixed to the top of three were back and headed upward today.

Yo! It dumped big time during the last 12 hours and all the teams left on the Captain have been accounted for and are in good shape thus far. I went down around 10:30 and looked through the thick clouds until I could find everyone I knew was up there. Kate and Pete were able to get off late and drudged down in the pouring rain.. Brenda says they were a pretty miserable looking duo when she picked them up at the Pile.

Yo… Very cloudy and cool here today with higher winds this afternoon. Today was “bail day” on the Captain with the lower parties hitting the lines and the higher parties heading for the top. The forecast is for a pretty quick and powerful storm here tonight and out tomorrow night. The cautious have hit the deck by now and those not in position to do so are hunkering down. Ranger Jack Hoeflick stopped by the bridge to assess the situation and see what parties need to be watched with a sharp eye. By now all climbers should know to carry a cell phone or at least a two way radio to communicate with the ground and keep current on the changing weather. In Yosemite, wet weather can be a death sentence so the wise head down if close enough to do so. Jack, as you probably know, is a very knowledgeable climber and an expert in rescue techniques on the YOSAR team. He has participated in numerous life saving rescues at great personal risk. For his efforts to help climbers in distress, today’s ElCap Report is brought to you by Jack Hoeflick… thanks Jack!!! So turn off the damn TV, close the door, take a deep hit and settle in because you are coming with me to the face of El Capitan to watch the climbers deal with possible adversity…. Today’s ElCap Report is right now…

Yo… very nice day here in the valley but it did rain during the night, mostly sprinkles.  Lots of clouds that kept the Great Wall cool for the teams who are by now a little tired of the heat of recent weeks.  BTW I have been misspelling Yuji by using a g instead of the j.  So if you see that mistake somewhere in the reports let me know.  Of course I misspell everyone’s name on the report!!  Today’s report is brought to you by Leo Burke, who was my climbing partner at the Pile this afternoon and dragged me up kicking and screaming… Oh the humanity!!
So settle in and get comfy because here it comes to you… Today’s ECR..

Yo.. Nice day here with a strong west wind blowing up the valley. The climbers on the wall looked pretty warm but I hear that a change in the weather is in the wind. Lots of parties on the wall today. Without further adieu here is today’s ElCap Report brought to you by the two teams who bailed from Dolt Tower today. So gag the rest of the family, put the pets in the basement, settle in with a Cobra, and read the latest dope headed your way from ECP’s….

Yo… Kind of funky weather today. Cooler with lots of clouds, which was great for my shooting and for the climbers too. Lightning, and thunder booming up behind Half Dome and some sprinkles down in the Valley seemed to be about it. It threatened above the Cap but never materialized. Today’s report is brought to you by Hans and Yuji who entertained us today with a four hour tune up on the Nose this morning. So here it is fresh off the computer just for you… Today’s ElCap Report

Yo.. A very nice day here at the bridge but lurking up behind the Dome was a mass of very dark clouds.  The weather forecast is calling for some bad weather in the next few days so the monkey’s are a little jumpy.  Parts of the morning were downright quiet here and the view suggested that the wall climbers were calmly going about their business.
Today’s report is brought to you by Beth, who broke out the left over pizza from a big feed last night in El Portal.

Yo… Wow! what a fine day here in the Valley of Adventure.  Lots of sun, breezes, and the company was the best!  The Cap saw some good action and sent a couple of the aspirants wheeling off the face.  More about that below.
Today’s report is brought to you by Mike Ousley who showed up late in the day with a fresh supply of cold ones to keep the party going… thanks Mike!!
So rack up the gear, check your knot, and tighten your shoes because you are going on climbs from Zodiac to the Salathe and will be right there when some of the gambles pay off and others go bad…
Here it is, just for you… right now… Today’s ElCap Report

Ok Kids.. Here we go! Beautiful here today, not so hot and cooler weather in the forecast. The old Captain was kicking butts and taking names today. The weeding out has begun on the Nose. More about that lower down in the report. So turn off the damn TV, tell everyone to put a lid on it, close and lock the door and come with me to the most sought after big wall climbing in the world. Today’s report is brought to you by several Tourons who parked their cars right in the road on the bridge and got out to take pictures today. Here it is…. Today’s ElCap Report, fresh from the face of the great rock itself…

Yo… Beautiful day here with some good breezes later in the day. The Face Lift got into full swing today and we had some good entertainment at the auditorium tonight. The great rock was not so hectic today so we kicked it back at the Bridge. Today’s report is brought to you by Chris Mac himself who showed up with nothing in particular to do and was somewhat conned into buying a couple rounds of Cobras for the usual suspects infesting the area. Thanks Chris… good fun today!
So kiss the little lady good night, put out the dog, lock the doors and settle in at the computer because here it comes direct to you… Today’s ElCap Report!!

OK!!! Here it comes again straight to you from the ElCap Bridge where the sun always shines and the fun never ends. Sweet day… a little warm up on the big stone but quite nice here in the valley. The great rock was swarming with teams and the fall season is now in full swing. Today’s report is brought to you by Jeanette and Jay who were hanging at the bridge today and are soon heading up on the Nose of El Capitan itself, hoping to seal the deal on this uberclassic route. They are psyched and so are the Rodents in residence at the Bridge.
There is a lot to report, and it is late, so I will flash this off like Alex Honnold on the NWFHD!!

Yo… yep … you now know that the master of the most important grade separation device in the history of American climbing, the so called “ElCap Bridge” has returned to the scene of his past glory days of shooting and slander… So dump the pets into the yard, tell the old lady/man to get the hell out of your face, grab a cold one and settle in for today’s ElCap Report, the first in a long series of reports to come your way in the coming weeks.

Yo… well the weather gods have smiled on us for the past two days.  Crystal clear skies and a very light breeze.  This is the last day for this report for a while so suck it up and take the pain!!  Quite the day it was too.  We still have climbers on the wall as we head into the summer months, and most likely there will be someone out there on the cliff every day through the hot months ahead.  Today’s report is brought to you by those folks who didn’t go for the record and won’t be written up in the mags for their climbing today.  They are my people.  The everyday man and woman who go out and get a living made, provide for a family and get away to the cliffs far too little.  They love climbing as much as anyone and manage to keep their spirit alive without frequent jolts of the climbing drug.  Every now and then they do get away and perhaps come to Yosemite to look and dream about the Great Wall some of us sometimes take for granted.  Then they blossom and I get to see them up there, tired and a little scared, pushing their limits to reach a personal dream.  I shoot them all, from the greats to the anonymous.  They are a part of a great brotherhood and it makes no difference their status… they are all climbers…. So this report is brought to you by you… climbers.

Yo!..  Really sweet here today.  Finally a clear day with no smoke for a change.  Unfortunately there was not much action on the Cap but I will share what there was with you.  I stayed late in the Café this morning as I had some images to do and my buddies Winky and Nicki showed up.  Winky gave me all the pertinent dope on digital processing and how to clean up my images.  That is one of the things I really like about Yosemite.  My fellow photographers are always so helpful and ready to share knowledge with me.  I don’t have much to contribute to them but that doesn’t matter here.  We are a tight group and it is a pleasure to know we all hold each in the highest regard.

Yo.. Well it started out really nice today here at the bridge.  Great weather with clear skies and a nice wind from the SE.  But that soon changed and the prevailing west wind did its thing and came along late in the morning with tons of smoke.  I was lucky I got out a little early to shoot the NC lads on Zodiac before the smoke set in.  The bridge was pretty quiet today.  The action on the Cap was quite subdued, as you will read below.
