How does the moon look so big

How does the moon look so big in this photo? Is it an optical illusion? Or a lens trick?
The shot is taken from the ground about 3/4 of a mile away with a 1200mm telephoto lens so it is like looking through a 
telescope.  It is an actual photograph and not some wimpy photoshop trick shot.
